The aim of the project is to promote the AI tools among the environmental activists and local/national authorities in the Western Balkan countries in coping with dumps. In this context, the idea is to urge the environmental activists throughout the region to use the mobile application in order to identify and monitor dumps. Accordingly, a map of dumps in the Western Balkans will be generated on the principle of crowdsourcing. The local/national authorities will have access to real-time data about location, size and composition of dumps that will help them to take effective measures

The project will encompass the following activities:

1. Desk analysis

2. Development of a demo-version of the AI-based mobile application

3. Organizing workshops with local environmental activists and volunteers

4. Organizing workshops with local/national authorities

5. Designing the management information system for data workflow

6. Probation period for testing the application

7. Dissemination and promotion activities in the Western Balkan region This pilot project will serve as a basis for building a model of AI-assisted waste management that can be promoted to other municipalities in the Western Balkan countries. Since all Western Balkan countries share similar environmental problems, by networking of civil society organisations and local/national authorities, this novel approach in dealing with dumps can be applied in broader regional context. As a consequence, the project will entail a number of follow-up activities that will strengthen the network of environmental civil society organizations in the Western Balkan region. By raising the awareness about the negative impact of the irresponsible waste disposal practices, the project will contribute to protection of the environment and will generate additional social benefits such as better planning and disposal strategies.
